Monotheism comes from the Greek words monos “only” and theos “god.” It is the belief-system that there is but one God that exists in reality. This view is opposed to polytheistic belief systems, which asserts that there are many gods and that exist in reality; and it opposes atheistic belief systems which assert there is no God or gods or any other supernatural entities in reality.
Prominent worldviews/religions that hold to a monotheistic belief-system are: Christianity, Deism, Judaism, Islam, some Panentheistic religions, and some Pantheistic religions (some sects of Hinduism and Buddhism for example believe in a single God or Absolute Reality). Within each of these worldviews/religions there is diversity as to the nature of the one God and their relationship to the physical world.
